Where great old Macs live again!

You'd think I would know this, but I don't. I did the seperate partitions to install OS X on the first, and OS 9 on the second to make it duel boot. I could not get Disk Utility to make the first partition smaller than 9 or 10 gig (can't recall which). I didn't think this would cause a problem, but the drive developed major directory issues that took major, repeated efforts with Disk Utility and Drive Genius to fix. And, it never actually said it was OK. I removed it, hooked up externally, and it just 'ticked.' It would not show up on the desktop, just ticked like it was a dead drive. Last ditch effort, I put it in the freezer over night, the defrosted it, installed it and now it's working. Yeah. I don't get it. But it does work.

I have installed OS 10.4, and OS 9 drivers. But, I just want it loaded with OS 10.4, with the ability to run Classic for some older applications. The computer I'm speaking of is a Pismo with a 128 G drive (defrosted). It's my son's Pismo, and he really doesn't want to deal with duel boot.

The last time I tried to load Classic on an OS X machine it scattered files all over. They wound up in a mixed up mess. I'd really like some help with the best way for a neat, clean installation. I looked on Apple's site, but got only vague information.

Thanks to anyone who can help!

One suggestion is to note what folders are created after you install os9, then make a folder (call it what you will, I named min OS9) and throw all the stuff in there. You can then put this folder anywhere on the hard drive. When you go to the Classic panel in System Preferences it will scan for OS9 and should find it with no troubles. Hope this helps!

ps There is also no problem rebooting directly into os9 using the Startup Disk preference.

Thanks John, I'll try that today. I want to get this Pismo back in action and back to my son today. I was wondering what the "Classic" folder is for. I could swear that I have seen an this folder in my machines that run both, but it's always empty. Do you know why? Is it suppose to be empty?

Thanks again for the help.

Hmmm. OS 9.1 would not install after OS 10.4. It wanted to do a clean install. I installed from the original Pismo disk a copy of 9.0.4., and am upgrading it to 9.1 now. This doesn't seem to be going too smoothly. Should I just > Initialize > Install 9.1, then 10.4?

Chicken or the Egg? Which right? Which is better?
