Brightened up one of my Extended Keyboard II's today. This AEK II is going to work with me in the morning to replace the mushy Logitech that I've been dealing with for 3 years. As a result, I'm looking for a new iMate ADB to USB adapter for use at home, where I do most of my typing on my MacBook Pro anyways.

Comment by Lim Thye Chean on August 12, 2012 at 8:26pm Wow! Can you do it on an early Mac or Apple II and see the result?
Very cool. It's great that you will be putting this to daily use.
In the "before" image it looks like there was an overlay around the function keys at some point. Any idea what it was?
Comment by Derek on August 12, 2012 at 9:38pm The Extended/II came with a blank overlay for the function keys.
Comment by Jason McCormack on August 12, 2012 at 9:51pm Lim, I've done a couple parts from other Mac's... I'll try and dig up some pictures. I'll try and select another Mac to work on before we run out of Summer here in Michigan. :) I'll post some pics if I do.
Thanks Andre. The way I see it, these are too nice to sit on a shelf or in a box, so I'm glad I can put it back to use where I can use it 40 hours a week. :)
Thanks Derek, that explains a lot... several of my Extended (if not all of them) have at least some evidence of having an overlay at some point.
On a somewhat related note, the REALLY light spot just to the right of the Apple logo was an ID tag that used to say "Property of University of Michigan". I removed it years ago when I first cleaned it up and don't have any pictures.
Comment by Lim Thye Chean on August 12, 2012 at 9:56pm Thanks!
I would really like to clean my Apple IIGS but hope to find a ready made solution as I am not a DIY guy...
Comment by Jason McCormack on August 12, 2012 at 10:39pm Just use the hair bleach portion of the "recipe": http://www.marlobeauty.com/images/T/7699-big.jpg
In my experience it is thick enough on its own that you don't need to turn it into a gel. Apply it to the part by brushing it on. Let it sit in the sun for an hour - not too long, you don't want the bleach to dry. Wash the part and touch it up as needed. Start with something small and work your way up to something you care about. This is hair bleach, so use gloves and handle with care. It can cause chemical burns. Apply lightly to areas with text, and be cautious of dark areas or dark plastics in general.
Comment by Lim Thye Chean on August 12, 2012 at 10:51pm I am not even aware of hair bleach, I asked my wife she also does not know. Will hunt around! Thanks for the tips - seems like something I can do myself!
Comment by Jason McCormack on August 13, 2012 at 8:29am No problem. If you do find some, be sure to get exactly what is in the link in my last comment. I have only used the Vol 40. In theory you could use a lower number, but never use a higher number. Increasing the strength will NOT make it work better. Like I said, be sure to start with a test piece or two before attempting something that you care about, like your IIgs. Good luck!!
Comment by Lim Thye Chean on August 13, 2012 at 10:31am Wow, I am not even aware of the Vol 40... got it! Now where to find those things...
Comment by Lim Thye Chean on August 13, 2012 at 7:58pm I just went to the local supermarket and can't find hair bleach... probably will go to some other places to check.
