Apple PowerBook 500s Appreciation Day!
The 500 series included several firsts: the first portable with a
- The First with a trackpad
- The first with a PCMCIA slot
- The first with stereo speakers
- The first with built-in ethernet
- The first with an "intelligent" NiMH battery
- The first with an expansion bay
- The first to automatically go to sleep when the lid was shut. In the field, users raved about the dual battery slots, allowing up to 4 hours from a charged pair of batteries.
These PowerBooks also introduced a full-sized keyboard (with 12 function keys), had a 640 x 480 screen, and were designed so they could be upgraded with a PowerPC processor. The 540c had an 8-bit active matrix color display

I was given one a couple months ago, but it isn't working... I think the power socket needs some soldering.

I have had my 540c for about 10 years now. The batteries are history and any you purchase now are non functional. I play with it every month or so with a few games, some of which will not work on any PPC Mac.
I found that instead of a CD required by some games, I could copy all the files (hidden included) to a compact flash card and use it in the PCMCIA slot as a substitute. An amazing Mac.
