About My Interest In Retro Macs

The father of my best friend in 5th grade got an early Mac. At that point I drank the Cool Aid and wanted to be part of the club of Mac owners. I settled for substitutes for many years but finally was able to make the dream a reality as an adult.

For space reasons I'm actually not much of a Mac collector. In the past ten years I've had Mac IIci and Apple IIgs systems as collectables but needed to part with them. For regular use, I've progress through Quadra 800, PowerMac 6100, Performa 6400, PowerBook G3 Series, and iBook G3 (dual USB). I currently use a PowerBook G4, which I guess is getting close to retro status.

Related to Mac, I own a NeXTstation Color Turbo system which I really need to turn on and make sure it's still working. Coveted but with no chance of purchasing due to insanely expense when I was in college, I picked it up for around $100 a few years ago.

I'm currently thinking about picking up an older PowerBook to pair with my QuickTake 100 but haven't decided which single PowerBook would be best.

Most of my hobby energies go towards comics, anime and sci-fi topics.

Finally Getting to the 2300c

After some overseas travel, busy family filled weekends and a lingering cold, I found a couple of hours tonight to start cleaning up the 2300c. It's hard to believe it's been about two months since I won the auction and it arrived!

For cleanup, I used a combination of electronics cleaning wipes, Q-Tips and some rubbing alcohol. Since it's just the exterior I was dealing with, I was mostly concerned about drying out the plastics with too much alcohol content. The pieces weren't in too bad of sha… Continue

2300c Has Arrived!

My eBay win 2300c arrived today. The packaging (and equipment too I think) smelled a bit. Not sure... maybe a smoker... or maybe just left out where it shouldn't have been. And, I was a further disturbed to find some red onion skin in the packing materials. -- WTH? Gross! -- I guess that's one of the perils of eBay... Maybe some recipient of one of my eBay sales thought that my packaging smelled (but I really doubt that's ever been the case).

Back on topic: I pulled out the sub-notebook and pow… Continue

PowerBook Duo Memories

Out of nowhere, I saw a listing for a PowerBook 2300c on eBay this week. I'd been regularly checking every other day or so (more exciting than waiting for a saved search email!) and the listing had about 2.5 days left so it must've been a short auction. Anyways, I won the auction. The 2300c will hopefully be on its way on Monday and in my hands before the end of next week.

I had debated a long time which machine to start my retro collection. Due to space issues, it had to be some sort of PowerB… Continue
