Derek replied to Lim Thye Chean's discussion Non-working Newton
"Aaargh. Right. Shows you how long it's been since I've owned a Newton. I guess you're stuck, then. Maybe it's time to cannibalize another Newton with a dead motherboard but a working screen."

Basilisk II 68K Mac Emulator on the Raspberry Pi

Basilisk II, a 68K Mac emulator running on the Raspberry Pi. Everyone asks if the Pi can do this or that. The only trick here was building from source (it's not in the Raspbian repos) which was easy: # apt-get install git libsdl1.2-dev # git clone…

"You should be okay, yes. :-)  AFAIK only the modern high-density USB-attached floppy drives are unable to read low-density 800k/400k Mac disks. (Does anyone know why? Wimpy controllers that don't grok GCR?)"

Booting my TiBook from CompactFlash

My poor TiBook is sick. :-( The original-generation 40GB Seagate Momentus hard drive is nearly five years old and is starting to do some funny things. I could replace it, but 2.5" IDE hard disks are getting harder to come by these days. If the machine died, what would I do with such a drive?

So instead of doing that, I decided to pick up a 16GB CompactFlash card ($70CDN) and the appropriate adapter ($20CDN). The verdict? The machine is… Continue

Upgrading my iPod Mini

I may live and breathe technology, but I refuse to give in to cell phone and MP3 player trends. I semi-reluctantly bought an iPod mini after the prices dropped in early 2005. 4 years later, the battery is nearing the end of its life and I was thinking about making the jump to a new Nano... but what I always really wanted was an iPod mini with more storage.

I just put a fresh battery from Sonnet Technologies in my iPod mini. I also took the opportunity to swap out the 4GB Hitachi… Continue

Hi Derek, I am also a big fan of your podcast and I know how you feel in falling behind on it. I started up two podcasts and then let them slide. You did a lot of episodes though.

Also, you were my inspiration for reading a book into a podcast - "Stan Veit's History of the Personal Computer." I am finally working on it again and almost done with chapter 2. It's a great book and I want to follow through on completing it. I hope to start up my Classic Computing podcast again soon too. Take care, David

Thanks for the comment! Unfortunately the IIsi's power supply went on the fritz about a week after I made the post. I guess I will have to troubleshoot it and come up with a fix.

Thanks for producing the folklore radio, it is fantastic to listen to!

OMG!! Thank you for that information. This is why Mac Lovers should be part of this site. I really appreciate you looking into the WPA problem and steering me to those articles. It sure helps to know that I'm not doing something wrong, it's just the equipment.

It would be nice if they would just go back to the friendly open network they had, but they upgraded to a shared T1 line (no wheezing the juice, no streaming Netflix) and upgraded the protocol and password protected it. At least they share with us, so I can't be complaining. But, I really miss the openness. Can't we all just get along?

Hi Derek, I'm still trying to figure out the comments system on this site.

The 520c runs great, I won it in an eBay auction a couple of days ago.

Like new condition, except for the hot pen engraving on the front of the lid - I don't think anyone really used it.
