PRAM "You're going to miss me when I'm gone!"

What is PRAM, who uses PRAM, for what? Who Cares: Stored settings? Clock time if the laptop battery drains. Hmmm. I don't really need to worry about that if my G5 PPC clock battery dies. It stays plugged in, right? It's not like I'm going to lug that huge cheese grater to work, or on vacation with me. Well, I would if I were going on a really long vacation, but that's not the point.

PRAM is not just for clock setting. Or even time zone, or even internet settings. Seems all kinds of… Continue

I Earned My Nerd Status Back?

Bouncing dock. Missing dock icons. Question mark icons in the dock. Can't reset dock preferences. Can't place icon in the dock, dock hides and won't come back. Can't drag items to trash before dock hides again and won't reappear until item is released. It's kind of a Hide & Seek behavior on the desktop.

I was beginning to think that my machine had some kind of new Dock Hide & Seek virus. The Dock would launch, and be up for about 3 seconds, then hide. I could not make… Continue

I Was a Apple Tech Support Nightmare.

Sorry Apple. I think I loose my Nerd status on this one.

Thank you to my sons for getting me a wonderful Christmas gift of an Apple TV. I spend Christmas, and the day after, at work, Bummer. But, it was much less a bummer since my boys drove down to my station and spent the day with me and my Bo at the station. My boys know that anything that comes in an Apple box is a fantastic gift for me. They made me the proud owner of an Apple TV, and I couldn't wait to play with it and see what… Continue

First Terminal Command! Newton and Pismo Agree To Talk!

Wow! Finally!

I finally got my Newton 2100 and my Pismo to communicate. After trying multiple times I finally decided to read the directions. Yep, I had to read directions, step by step. I downloaded the Newton Connection software for OS X, and hooked up my Keyspan USB to Serial adapter, and my Serial Adapter for my Newton and followed the instructions that came with the NCX software.

The only thing I did differently was the terminal command for setting the… Continue

Welcome Kathryn! Since you're not far, will you be at MW Expo next week? What is that thing you're examining in your picture?

I second that request.

The damn comment threading on this system causes messages to get sent all over. Please accept my apologies when I quote you here (So others can see it) and then respond

Hi James, thanks for the welcome. The thing in the photo is a Battle-Bot form the, now defunct TV show. I use to do first aid for the company contracted by Battle-Bots. That one was wounded in battle, and I had the owner e-mail me the photo. I guess I should specify that I did First Aid for the humans, not the bots. And, Yes! I am going to MacWorld! WoooHooo! I have had to miss it for a few years, and I'm glad to be going back. I use to go every year when I lived in the SF Bay Area, but since I moved south, and got so busy working, I've had to skip. I am hoping to connect with the Vintage Mac fans there. Any suggestions on how I can meet up?

I was going to say that it looked like a 'bot.

So you put the crazies back together after they hurt themselves on nitrogen powered axes?

Way cool. It sure wasn't my fault it fell off the air. (or my kids)

Kathryn - I sent you a message through this website but sometimes it's hard to see that so take a look at the little envelope icon at the top of the screen.

Thanks for the responses, and the help learning the site. I'm still stumbling around in the dark *ouch* and bumping into things. I must say, Wholly Mindless, that Battle Bots was one of the most fun jobs I've ever had. And, James, thanks for the tip about the message indicator.

Ah-When I used to drive a truck and make deliveries, I had one stop in Benicia and 2 in Fairfield but was only up that area twice a week. Of course I used to deliver down in Monterey area too. I live down in Hayward. I take it you don't ride anymore? I have a 2002 buell x1 and a springer soft tail custom-which is in the pic, not that you get a good look at her--lol. She is in need of some tlc. I have 3 mac right now-a dual 1 Ghz g4 tower which is my daily driver, an iMac snow g3-my back up or as I like to call her, my lap top cause that is the one I take down stairs when I need a computer down there. John called it my LUG TOP-lol. And there is the iMac grape g3 that is the family computer. I don't consider them retro since they are in use-lol. I began on a Performa 6115 cd so I would have to say that would be my favorite since that is the only real retro mac I've used. I have only had 4 macs in my life--lol. I have come very late to the computer game-my skills and knowledge is weak. I feel the force is strong within you-lol
