Impressive knee :-) Do they sell the French Fries (= Chips) with vinegar at McDonald's? Actually, the rest of the world knows them as 'Pommes Frites'.

If it were on a Mac, with SoftWindows or VirtualPC (both of them emulating Windows '95), it would not hurt so deeply.

You described the annoying sounds from inside the monitor: Your report could be the one of my 12". I located the sounds (with a hose in my ear, just like a stethoscope) as coming from inside a coil, a big one, which may have corroded solderings or other contacts (inside it then); nothing visible anyway. It is one of these damn parts you'll never find on any standard order list; Apple will give no support and so on. Its days may be counted - but I recently picked up a substitute.

You commented my photo 1994 Setup - This is what I wrote there:
"Sizzeling noises may come from old capacitors - my oldest monitor (a 12"-RGB Apple for the LC series) in use is producing some of that kind. But not everytime it is started up and it's only the way to a serious problem."

Wow, those are some pretty pictures of your multicolor iBook monitor. Mine never got colorful like that, it just blacked out, with a ghost image. I still haven't gotten it back together. I still need to buy monitor cables to replace the ones on my little IBook. And, get it a new hard disk. I'm hoping when I get it together it will be good as, almost, new. The processor is still chugging along fine, it was when I took it apart anyway.

I never did check the ADB-USB adapter on Leopard, but I see no reason why it wouldn't. Did you have an issue doing that? I'd check now, but I don't know where I put it.

Just for the record, the palm rest on the left hand side of the iBook getting hot is something that people often complain of... but it's just the hard disk! Really! The CPU is nowhere near there. My 1st-gen Dual USB iBook with its Travelstar drive was particularly noisy and hot. :( But it lived!

Why, yes I have had those problems. In fact, my G3 iBook is in many pieces waiting for a new hinge replacement. For a long time the screen would go dark, with a ghost image if I moved the lid while running the computer. I would then have to close it, let it sleep, then open it again and sometimes the screen would light up again.

I finally took it apart, and it's in many layers with the screws taped to layer diagrams so I can put it back together after I find replacements for the hinge cables, and a new hard drive, and Superdrive. The keyboard work though.

I'm not giving up on it. I really like the size of the 12" dual USB PB. It was a nice portable machine and I know I'll get it up and running again after I find all the parts.

Do you have one with the same problems?

I have a rubber or silicon keybord overlay which is black with white lettering. I'm going to get a white-out pen or something similar and draw the Apple back on there where it belongs.

And I agree with you, it is a command key, but it's an Apple key also. Calling it an Apple key, to me, always made more sense, especially when trying to tell someone else which key to use. If you told a new Apple user to hold down the Command key they wouldn't understand as easily as if you said to hold down the Apple key. Hey, it's got an Apple on it! Not, hey it says Command on it.

No need to feel that way. We often don't pay as much attention to something we think will always be there. Who knew that Apple who put her out to pasture, and remove the Apple from the Command key? Why Apple, why?

I want to make a little key overlay with an Apple on it so I can put the Apple back on my Command key. And, if I ever get a new Mac, I want them to make a screen overlay so it doesn't look like the reflective PC display.

Dogcow, take me away!

BBC Radio 1 and Apple

Just Heard something on Radio 1...

They were talking about exam scores and that teenagers are getting dumber, but getting higher grades. They then compared exam results for 1976 and they said...

"1976, only 3 channels on T.V. and Apple just made their first computer, the size of a wardrobe"

WRONG !

Hmm.

iBook :D

Today I picked up a 600 MHz dual USB iBook and I am rather happy. I'm happy because I didn't pay a single penny for it ! All I had to do was install windows XP on boot camp for the technician. As a joke I asked for a iBook, he chuckled and left the room... Came back a couple of mins latter and 'Boom', he gave me an iBook.

The little guy is in a good-ish condition for being used for 4 year in a laptop trolley, then chucked in a store room for like 3 or so years. There is two rubber feet missing,… Continue
