The Nature of Collecting Retro Macs

This just in. "House containing hundreds of old computers catches on fire. We have video... It looks like this guy keeps computers like that crazy old lady kept cats.... "

What's your best Thrift Store / Yard Sale / Side of the Road find?

Our local PBS (Public Broadcasting) station has a thing for British Comedy and brings many over here. If they don't BBC America brings them. That's how I know that the British version of "The Offic... Continue

What's your best Thrift Store / Yard Sale / Side of the Road find?

It's from Red Dwarf (Makes sense now, dunnit?) Here's a write up on the conversation. Now, for anyone that hasn't followed the links to try to make sense of this. Scrumping is "stealing fruit" or... Continue

Long time, no post... So...

It makes sense that I post about old stuff. Wandering the a2central.com site tonight I looked into Luddites Apple //e web server. I was wondering if it was still up after all the abuse we'd all given it. So, I jumped over and took a look at it. Still there, 2000+ hits. But I noticed a link to a C64 running the same software. When I got over there I found a much more C64 like page with a lot more info AND more than 60,000 hits. Looks like a challenge to… Continue

Apple ][ Resources updated on "Pre-Mac Goodness"

I've added some links to some very useful Apple ][ Community resources on the Pre-Mac Goodness page. It includes information about "Summer Camp for Geeks" - KansasFest and the incredibly helpful A2Central site. There are lots of cool things happening this year with ReactiveMicro,… Continue

Old Apple gets a workout

A slightly loony Canadian has managed to get his Apple //e hosting web pages to the internet using an ethernet card and the Contiki OS. It's actually running as a server and is delivering a page with a few links and some images. I'd have put the link in this earlier but I wanted to ensure that you guys knew that this machine is WOEFULLY unsuited for delivering content. The tiny image of the //e, is actually 1/3 of the entire memory space of the machine. One really useful piece of info there is… Continue

That's not retro. Now *THIS* *IS* RETRO...

I saw this and thought of RetroMacCast... This is a quick blurb about the computer used on the Lunar Excursion Module (LEM) betwen 1969 and 1972 on http://dvorak.org/blog A Brief Look At The Computer That Helped With The Lunar Landing From the posting: It’s cycle time was 1 Mhz, 11 instructions. It had 1K of 16 bit words of erasable (RAM) core memory and 12K of read-only memory (ROM). The ROM held the “Colossus 249″ flight control software… Continue

im not sure what that means. If its an issue of too many images, I thought the images were interesting for several reasons. In the interest of being a part of this community, I thought Id share. I could've uploaded them individually over time maybe? Is that what you mean? Is there an upload restriction? Is retromaccast running out of space? If so Ill happily take them off and save space for more intriguing images. Is the issue that they're taking up too much screen real estate? Maybe I (the user) could have the option to upload them directly to an 'album' so it wouldn't be a swath of images. Albums only hold 20 at this point. Maybe it was bad netiquette and if so, sorry :D, lesson learned. cheers!

Hey, I just connected that my one comment on my Stan veit podcast page is from you - "I thought it was great! I am still waiting for more!" Tuesday, July 10, 2007 - 09:22 AM

Well, I'm trying hard to finish chapter two this week, so be looking for it! I am getting back to my hobby like a man on fire! Stan's book deserves to get more out there as soon as possible too. Thanks man!

Whoa, just Wholly?! Oh, OK, well . . . then, that will be "Mr." Classic Computing to you then! Just kidding. My first computer, you know that I owned and used, was in 1986 - a Commodore 64. Though a good ol' Apple ][+ was the first personal computer I ever used, in college, in 1982. Yeah, my collection has shrunk a bunch since 1994. Mostly because my family has grown, plus some moving around, money troubles, etc. When I first started collecting, we had our first child on the way. Now I have three. But, I think I have a nice collection now too. I have focused now more on handhelds and some laptops and portables. I still love the hobby, but the collecting of hardware aspect has lessened greatly, but as I've mentioned, mostly out of realities of my life.

Hi Wholly (I was trying to find out your real name). My name is David. That picture was taken by a reporter from "Texas Monthly" magazine waaaaaaaaay back in 1994. I will be adding a newer picture soon, with my current fat face! Here's the full pic -

I hope to convert that article about my collecting hobby at the time into a pdf soon and put it on my website. Yeah, that's an original Commodore PET 2001 there. Ah, but also my original Lisa 2 behind me too! Plus a couple of terminals, and my arm is on top of a Commodore SX-64. Thanks for commenting!

Not a new drive... the old one - we take it out, bend the head here and there, and it seems to work again... for some disks. :)

Anyway, seems like this web site is quite quiet nowadays...

Good news! I got my non-working drive working again... at least partially, not all the disks work. So now I got 2 drives, one each for the 2 Apple IIGS I got. I made one of these (the one that accompanied me 18 years ago...) into a "Media Center" playing DiversiTune and FTA demos... and my son now has his own BASIC machine doing programming.

Just to let you know that my old Apple IIGS - a machine I owned 18 years ago (and now 20 years old since I bought 2nd hand) - now come back alive. I also got myself another floppy drive, and now I am taking more photos again!

I couldn't keep up with all the Apple ][ news coming out so I added an RSS feed to A2Central.com on the Pre-Mac Goodness group.

New 4 Meg memory cards from Vince Briel, more Uthernet cards on sale at reactivemicro.com and more all poured out this week.
