I thought it might be interesting to give my coverage of the grand opening of the Apple Store in the Promenade mall in Temecula.
They opened today at 10 AM PDT, so we decided to get in line at about 8:30 AM after having breakfast at McDonalds around 7:45. The weather was reasonably nice around here: it was cloudless and 75°F with 41% humidity, though they supplied black umbrellas and rather expensive Glaceau water around 9 AM. My party got to the Store early enough to be one of the first to be…

I have just taken delivery of a Macintosh Plus and a Macintosh SE. Both were very kindly given to me,
by a university lecturer who has just retired. Both machines where stored away in a back room, not being used
for years. He found them when he was cleaning out his belongings and did not want them to be skipped.
I have chosen the Plus, to be the machine that I will work on to continue my blog about restoring and cleaning.
In…

As we look back at hours of footage we shot for
MacHEADS, we realize there is so much great stuff we couldn’t have entered the movie. Much valuable and educational archives would have just evaporated, so we decided to s…

Today me and my dad went up to the dump like normal. In there, there's a section reserved mainly for old junk, but today, I found this old Macintosh SE30 dubbed "The Dragonball Z Computer" by its former owner in that section. And it still works.
So heres what it looks like:

I have just acquired a g3 blue and white 350 mhz mac tower with a 17" Apple crt monitor. The first thing I did to it was replace the 6 gb hard drive and put in a 20 gb hard drive and install 10.4.11 on to it. The other up grades I did was to install 4 128 mb memory chips, a wireless card, and 4 usb 2 ports card. This is my first tower so it is a different experience of not have to tear apart the computer to get to any of the insides. It runs well on the os 10.4 and I plan on putting in a second…

The Apple Lisa II
By Adrian Franulovich 28/2/07
I recently purchased an Apple Lisa II for my extensive museum and cache of Apple Macintosh History. I originally thought I would steer clear of anything that wasn't mac related but the Lisa definitely holds a major place in Apple's history.
First of all some things I have learned to help make sense of the whole Lisa range.
Apple released a few flavors of the Lisa, the Lisa, the Lisa 2, Lisa 2/5, Lisa 2/10 and Macintosh XL.
Interesting things ab…

See Robs 128k Mac featured on the Cult of Mac tribute to 25 years of Macintosh!

"Meet Rob Baca. He’s a serious vintage Mac collector, with a total of 75 machines in his possession. He’s also the man who co-directed the documentary Welcome to Macintosh, which counts among its interviewees our ver…

Each of the previous years I've attended Macworld Expo, I've nervously made plans to arrive the day before the keynote. If anything were to go wrong, I wouldn't risk missing Monday registration and therefore, I'd miss the keynote too. This year I decided to fly in a day early and not risk it. This would have to be the year Steve Jobs isn't delivering the keynote. The flights today were trouble-free and I took care of getting my badge this afternoon.

Sorry Apple. I think I loose my Nerd status on this one.
Thank you to my sons for getting me a wonderful Christmas gift of an Apple TV. I spend Christmas, and the day after, at work, Bummer. But, it was much less a bummer since my boys drove down to my station and spent the day with me and my Bo at the station. My boys know that anything that comes in an Apple box is a fantastic gift for me. They made me the proud owner of an Apple TV, and I couldn't wait to play with it and see what it could d…

I spent one day taking apart the 12" G4 iBook. I diagramed each layer, taped the screws to each layer of the diagram. Layer by layer I dug deeper until I separated each part that I thought might be causing the problems, and that could be easily replace. I'm leaving it in pieces until it's new hard drive arrives, cuz there is no way in Toledo, I'm putting it back together just to have the hard drive go out next week. Taking an iBook apart more than once every six months without getting paid to do…

PC Pro (UK Magazine/Site) did a remake of the iPhone 3G ad that touts the speed of the new iPhone. What was done in a 30 second spot, took more than 2 minutes and 20 seconds on a WiFi connection.
The Advertising Standards Authority claimed that the original ad was too misleading and had Apple pull the ad.
The side by side comparison can be found
here.
Is the iPhone really that slow? Do…

I was in the process of adding several apple news and highlights to my page, when I discovered it took forever to load all the "widgets".
So I created a mashup of all the RSS feeds I wanted, and using Widgetbox I created a single widget you can add to your page using all the feeds.
You can see the widget in action here, or you can add the widget to your RetroMacCast page by going here...

When recently filling out the new RetroMacCast member form, I reflected on my first home computer back in 1984 -- a Macintosh 128k. What a simple yet ground-breaking machine, destined to forever change my view on computing and life in general. No, the Mac does not capture my every waking hour, but it has inspired my love of computers and technology, ultimately leading me to study electrical engineering in college which in turn brought me to Japan.
This first Mac was not actually "my" Mac (at th…

I have previously stated that I didn't think the iPhone/iPod Touch had gone far enough down the PDA route to be truly useful to the business community, despite the added Outlook integration provided by the iPhone 3G. With that in mind (and considering my old O2 XDA has gone the way of the dodo), I picked up a Newton (MessagePad 110) from eBay for the princely sum of £4 plus postage and thought I'd see if I could make use of that to help me keep my day organised.
I just thought I'd update you al…

First of all, thanks to eBay, I am now the proud owner of an Apple Newton. For £4.75 plus postage, I picked up a Messagepad 110, which is fine by me. I know it's not as cool as the later 2100, but it'll do for a start and I rather like the design. I'm looking forward to getting hold of it and am genuinely interested in seeing if I can't run an entire project using nothing but the Newton and my Pismo PowerBook. I don't see why not and, if all goes well, I think I'll post the findings up here.
I'…

As I sat at my Pismo the other day, reviewing artwork for a multinational web campaign, the thought suddenly struck me that a lot of businesses are now moving towards using Macs, because the Intel processor lets them use Windows for the "office" style things and the creatives can get on with doing the pretty stuff on Apples as they always have done. I remember, not so long ago, that the great resistance to switching was always based around the argument "well, Macintoshes are great if you're crea…
