I have just taken delivery of a Macintosh Plus and a Macintosh SE. Both were very kindly given to me,
by a university lecturer who has just retired. Both machines where stored away in a back room, not being used
for years. He found them when he was cleaning out his belongings and did not want them to be skipped.
I have chosen the Plus, to be the machine that I will work on to continue my blog about restoring and cleaning.

I have just acquired a g3 blue and white 350 mhz mac tower with a 17" Apple crt monitor. The first thing I did to it was replace the 6 gb hard drive and put in a 20 gb hard drive and install 10.4.11 on to it. The other up grades I did was to install 4 128 mb memory chips, a wireless card, and 4 usb 2 ports card. This is my first tower so it is a different experience of not have to tear apart the computer to get to any of the insides. It runs well on the os 10.4 and I plan on putting in a second…

More progress has been made to my new Plastic Pal Who's Fun to Play With (tm). Before painting the front I had to get it ready for the banana logo. About an hour with an exacto knife accomplished this quite nicely.

The next step was to fill in the gaps where parts of the apple shape were larger than the banana. I wrapped…

Because I'm polite, I just missed out on a free Mac Plus with carrying bag.
Bummer. I'd have even paid something (nominal) for it.

See Robs 128k Mac featured on the Cult of Mac tribute to 25 years of Macintosh!
Here are some quotes:
"Meet Rob Baca. He’s a serious vintage Mac collector, with a total of 75 machines in his possession. He’s also the man who co-directed the documentary Welcome to Macintosh, which counts among its interviewees our ver…

I celebrated the 25th birthday of the Macintosh by making and appropriately decorated brownie and playing some of my all-time favorite retro black-and-white games,
Lode Runner and
Crystal Quest. If you've never played these, fire up MiniVMac or your old compact Mac and give them a try.

Hi,
Should anyone be interested there's a guide detailing how to install leopard onto a PM 8500 and later (with a G4 upgrade) on: http://www.macmod.com/site-news/1801-2008-mod-of-the-year-announced.
Written by yours truly.
There are also some other mods which are excellent.
James.

I acquired a Mac 128k/512k (it came with both logic boards) and a GCC HyperDrive 20 Mac 512k over the last few years ago. Since then, I've spent a lot of time examining the innards of these two classic beauties. Being an electronics hobbyist with an EE degree, I certainly enjoy tinkering. One thing I discovered is that electronic components, especially old electrolytic capacitors, are often in need of replacement to get the machine back in original working condition. I visited a variety of sourc…

When recently filling out the new RetroMacCast member form, I reflected on my first home computer back in 1984 -- a Macintosh 128k. What a simple yet ground-breaking machine, destined to forever change my view on computing and life in general. No, the Mac does not capture my every waking hour, but it has inspired my love of computers and technology, ultimately leading me to study electrical engineering in college which in turn brought me to Japan.
This first Mac was not actually "my" Mac (at th…

I'm in the process of setting up my hobby studio (hey, I won't deny that I am a geek) and was looking for some inspiration - Think Different posters, possibly making a large medieval banner (I am in the middle of building a fantasy town/city to house my ever-growing collection of wargame miniatures and, as I don't get time to play, am making them into a large static display, with lighting, etc). When I found
this and was intrigued by the…

I was recently interviewed by Giles Turnbull of
Cult of Mac who had seen my SE/30 and Newton

this article on these classic Apple machines.
UPDATE: How funny. I became a new member just today and after posting my blog entry, I deci…

As I sat at my Pismo the other day, reviewing artwork for a multinational web campaign, the thought suddenly struck me that a lot of businesses are now moving towards using Macs, because the Intel processor lets them use Windows for the "office" style things and the creatives can get on with doing the pretty stuff on Apples as they always have done. I remember, not so long ago, that the great resistance to switching was always based around the argument "well, Macintoshes are great if you're crea…

I know that we've had the eight-core Mac Pros and the the MacBook Air and, in fairness, the aluminium iMac (a machine I think is stunning, but I
really don't like the keyboard), but they aren't, well, new.
Bear with me, as I think this needs some explanation - yes, we have had a myriad new products, but we haven't had anything to change the world in the same way that the original Macintosh did. Or, I suppose, the Macintosh II in the way it overturned the entire print and design industry…

So my family was cleaning out my brother's bedroom, and a discussion started about what to do with the Power Mac G4, and the Power Macintosh G3 8600 that my dad had sitting in the corner. Of course, I offered to take them off my hands, but he decided to take them to work, and put them to "real use" in his words. I'm pretty much broke at the moment, and I wanted to add to my collection. Now I guess I have to save some money to get a few retro Macs.

ByteCellar has a writeup on the
Abaton Transform. I've never seen one or heard of one but it claimed to be able to convert almost any Apple II program to run on the Macintosh.
Check out the article for more details.
Has anyone ever seen one?

Just a quick post to remind everyone on here that they should immediately go out and watch Pirates of Silicon Valley. Ok, it stars that guy from ER and one of the geeks from the 80s movie "Weird Science", but for any true computer nerd, this movie is a kind of pilgrimage. Telling the story of the rise of the personal computer by charting the rise and fall (and subsequent re-rising) of Steve Jobs and Apple, as well as the rise of Bill Gates and Microsoft.
Yes, it's a bit lightweight in parts and…

There are a lot of magazine articles (not to mention books and websites) that are dedicated to the theme of getting started as a digital design agency, either as a freelance going it alone, or as a group of designers forming their own business. Mostly, these are concerned with things like building your company website and ensuring your logo translates well from the screen to a printed business card or letterhead.
Now, I'm not knocking such articles and, to be honest, some of them even inspired…

I've had my Mac Mini for just over a month (I got it a month before yesterday), and I've been loving it ever since. It felt like there was no learning curve. I just got it right away. This is by far my favorite computer I've ever used (other than the Mac Pro at the Apple Store). Leopard is beautiful, and makes Windows look like a joke. The iLife suite is just awesome. I'm very happy with this purchase, and I'm getting very close to finishing off my payment to my parents. Only $95 to go!
