ByteCellar has a writeup on the Abaton Transform. I've never seen one or heard of one but it claimed to be able to convert almost any Apple II program to run on the Macintosh.

Pre-Apple Retro - Atari's early years 1971-77

Gamasutra is running a great article on the early history of Atari. Not much that is new here but it does go a long way stringing the known stories together to explain why they ... I can't tell you. You have to read it to find out. But it happened in 1976 and a couple of guys named "Steve" were involved.
