Where great old Macs live again!

Picked up a rare NuBus card today from eBay here in Melbourne, Australia: An Apple Remote Access Server Card complete in box with all manuals and software.

I've taken a few photos of the box and contents for those who are interested:

Apple Remote Access Server Card photos

Essentially this is a four port RS-232 serial port card for a NuBus equipped Mac with Apple Remote Access server software to manage the dial ins. You had to supply your own modems.

I used to run similar hardware on a PC Server back in the late 90's (Cyclades 8 port for those who are interested) - that was expensive enough. I can only imagine how much the Apple version sold for!

When I get time, I'll hook the RS-232's directly to 4 x Macs and see if I can trick them into talking without modems in between.

I don't see a crack in it? Wouldn't it have to have a crack to be an ass?

One question, What good are serial ports for a mac style screen? Just wondering, I've put 36 ports on a PC in my dark past but more than two on a mac seems a bit strange. NuBus is pre-OSX isn't it?

Apple Remote Access initially provided a remote dial up solution for AppleTalk networks (ie mount AppleShare volumes over dialup). Later versions provided TCP/IP routing solutions also.

Yes - this was all pre-OSX. Unix can supply the same functionality out of the box (and OSX has some nice GUI windows to configure it).

I can see that as being useful. So, let us know when you get it working!

If you get it set up, I can test it by dialling in! (I'm local)
