This has never happened to me before. My partner at work has been asking me to hook his father up with a cheap, Apple laptop. He knows I collect, and he sees all the different laptops come in and out of the station. He asked me to see if I would like to trade his fathers old computer equipment for a PowerBook that he can use to check his e-mail and write with.
I went with my partner to his parents home and I brought a Wallstreet and a Pismo with me to show them. I showed them the OS 9, OS X, and the differences between the two computers, serial ports, verses USB and FireWire, etc. Then, I noticed they had a Titanium PowerBook. They said they had been borrowing it from their daughter and they really didn't know how to use it other than to check their e-mail. Then, I had to touch it. I had never touched a Titanium before. They are nice. Very nice. Then, I had to show them a few things they didn't know about the Titanium they were borrowing from their daughter, like how to turn on the volume.
Then, out of the blue. The elderly lady, my partner's mother, called me a Nerd. She said, "You're a Nerd, aren't you."
I was suddenly without speech, without thought. Then, came the giggles, and snickers, and outright laughing. I have never, ever, been called a Nerd before. I did not take offense. Why would I? I could only hope to earn that title since I know of 11, and 14 year old Mac Geeks who could run circles around me. And, it's better than being called a "Blonde white bit#h" by some gang member with who was run down by his adversaries, or some of the other more colorful things I've been called by some of my finer clients.
Wow! I find I like 'Nerd' better than 'Blonde white bit#h.' I know a Nerd isn't quite the same as a Geek, but, hey, I'll take it. I am still laughing. I think I'll get a T'shirt.
