I hear ya! I love to take my machines apart and see what's inside, even if I know I can't fix it, I'm still curious enough to look. Must be pretty interesting to be a tester for PCs. Getting paid to make PCs crash, love it!
Try a simple thing as Apple+Mac+PowerBook+How+to+open+pdf as a 'Google'-search.
This leads you to the 'MacForums', the 'LowerendMacs' or a few other user groups.
A friendly guy once linked me up to a special 'How-to-open-a-PB-1400' since I have one with a croaking speaker. One result was that if you do this (and the machine is a little older), it is a reasonable thing to change the PRAM battery at the same time. But he wrote it like this (qoute): "Removing the battery means removing everything but the battery"...
It's always a pleasure to me to share my experiences with people who really do want to keep their old machines 'alive' - sometimes I fail(ed), and then it's an even greater joy when I get things going again.
And Kathy is absolutely right - one reliable machine has to be working straight ahead, at least.
We, who usually have alternatives, can keep a second machine as a backup first and secondly as a substitute, for the case of the unexpected !
Hello Hillbillybear! Thanks for the compliment on my blog about the PRAM debacle. I had fun writing it, but not much fun going through problems. I usually enjoy working on my computers, tracking down problems and trying to solve them. I get a real sense of accomplishment when I can figure out a problem. But, not when it's my main computer that I count on everyday.
Hey Hillbillybear! Thanks for adding me to your friend's list. As I said, fantastic pictures of those PowerBooks. I keep drooling over them whenever I see them. :-)
