Where great old Macs live again!

I recently won five Macs on ebay for £5.50, they where sold as not working or for spares. I thought I would give it a try and see what I get. The Macs where located about two and a half hours away from me, so I had to wait for a spare Saturday morning to go and collect them.

The journey down there was trouble free, I met the seller and loaded up with my new toys. Then seller had collected them from local car boot sales, but had run out of space and wanted to have a clear out. He still has a Classic, so he still has some retro in his house. He was very interested in what I was going to do with them, which lead to a 15 minute conversation about my obsession.

The journey back was not so good, lots of traffic and a large tail back. but it was worth it. I unloaded the treasure whilst my wife made comments like "what's this junk". The list goes something like this.
1x LC
1x LC475
1x IIcx
1x IIci
1x 1x Powerbook Duo 280c
1x 12' RGB Apple Display
1x 120mb external hard disc
2x Style Writers
1x Image Writer
2 x Keyboard II
1x Designers Keyboard
1x Extended Keyboard
Plus some Mice and Cables

I started testing stuff out and the LC 475 was the only one that booted, so the other will be used for spares or combined to get another up and running, watch this space for updates. All in all for the price I paid, just the Extended keyboard makes it worth while, as I have been after one for a while.

What a great deal! I bet more of those Macs would work with some simples fixes.

I'll bet the wife still doesn't understand.

@ James, I will definitely try and get them up and running if I can. though one will have to be a donor.

@ Wholly Mindless, You're right, she does not understand. I think this is a common thing. I always laugh when James and John make reference to their wives, and getting permission to buy more Macs. I remember John saying you start buying then you start smuggling.

But 5 pounds, Honey! What a deal! (Ok, so I spent 60 pounds on petrol and 6 hours away from you on a Saturday... What, that's ok then?)

Yeah the fact I spent six times as much in petrol, does make it harder to justify. But the promise of lunch out, helped in this case.

Definitely you'll be able to get more of those Macs running!
By the way, that always cracks me up when guys talk about the wife not understanding because when I was married it was the other way around - my ex couldn't understand my Mac obsession. Let's just say that NOW, I have a lot of Macs!! And nobody to criticize me or complain when I bring home another Mac! Life is good!!
Be sure to set her up with a Mac of her own (although this didn't work for me) and maybe we'll have another member here at the RMC!!

Hi Pam, it's nice to see there's always the exception, I hope it was not the cause of the spilt. Not many ladies share our obsession. My wife is a bit of a technophobe, so it will be hard getting her into Macs. But she does have a iPod so we might be getting somewhere.

Did you manage to convince your wife to go WITH you on this adventure? I can only imagine the conversation in the car, which you probably tuned out with thoughts of 5 macs for 5 pounds...

I know how it must be for you with your wife's not understanding...

I have to deal with a 50 Year old, semi OCD suffering, catholic woman who also has a fear of wires.

At first, the 'object' will go into the garage... then after a little while i will slip it into the house while she isn't looking. Though she usually comes up to my room and saying somthing angry about how i don't need any of it and it's CLUTTER !

She has damages a couple of manuals from chucking them around... She ALMOST chucked away the Mac 128K Manual...

Hi Damian,
No, not the cause of the split I don't think... Hmmm, now that you mention it.... ;-)
I hope that iPod will bring your wife into the fold. I love tech and can't imagine life without my Apple toys.

I feel your pain! Especially about the manual. I just got a Mac 512k with a manual. It's beautiful!! The manual is gorgeous!!
And I'm getting 3 "new" toys tomorrow, including a //gs that's leading me down the new path of pre-Mac goodness!

Well hang in there. But it still cracks me up! I have Macs all over my house. They all work. They all make me happy. They are certainly NOT clutter!
