Got a new imac g3 but it sometimes black-screens and needs to be restarted.

First thing to try is to pull the memory SIMM(s), clean the edge contacts with a pencil eraser to remove any oxidation, then re-insert.  This will often clear up seemingly random reboots.  The second line of defense is to replace the filter caps in the power supply, but those generally present a more catastrophic failure mode than what you describe.  Hope this helps...
