Where great old Macs live again!

Well friends, I finally have bought another Macintosh!!  It's taken almost a year since I bought my TAM, but there is a new Mac in the house.  I had been looking for an older Mac to serve as a computer for my mom.  She is intimidated about using my iMac, even though I set up an account for her on it.  I had said that I'd find an older one for her to use, but she didn't think she needed one.  As I looked more, and showed some of them to her, she kind of got more interested.

I had been thinking about G3 or G4 iMacs, possibly maybe a G5 or early Intel iMac, if I could find one for the right price.  I hadn't forgotten about the eMacs either, and kinda like their shape, and color.  I showed mom one on my computer, and she said she liked it too.  So I started looking more for eMacs than anything.  When I had the extra money I couldn't find anything, and things were available when I didn't have the money!  But an eMac did crop up this week just south of town, for $80!

It's of course a G4 PPC processor, 700 Mhz, 40 GB HDD, and I think around 256 MB of RAM, and a CD ROM.  It has 2 Firewire 400, 3 USB 1.1, a min VGA port for mirrored only mode, 10/100 Ethernet, and audio in & out round up the ports.  It is running OS X 10.3.9 Panther, which is kinda different from Leopard/Snow Leopard, but not at the same time.  It's the first time I've been infront of a Mac running something other than Tiger, Leopard, or Snow Leopard.

Some of the Apps on it include: itunes 7.6.1, Safari 1, Firefox, iMovie 4 I think, iPhoto, MS Office for Mac 2004, and a lot of your other typical OS X apps.  I was surprised to see  Mail, Address Book, iCalendar, and some other things I thought were more recent additions to the os.  The was also Audacity, Flip 4 Mac, and I think an app that maybe Stuffit Expander?  It just says Stuff It.

I think this will be a great computer for my mom to use!  She mostly wants to use it for the internet.  I have to find a Wi-Fi option to get it up & running on my Airport Network, but a couple of comments from The RMC Forums have already helped me out there!!  I'd like to get around over the course of the year to upgrading to 10.4.11 Tiger, maxing out the RAM at 1 GB, and possibly putting in a larger HDD for her.  I know that my mom will simply love it, and love the convenience of Wireless internet!!  She'll be able to move it anywhere, and not worry about the ethernet cable!  :-)  Besides, if she every decides she doesn't like it, doesn't want it anymore, or wants to buy a newer computer/Mac, then the eMac gets to retire to my too slowly growing Macintosh Collection!!  :-D  :-D  :-D  :-D

Sorry I don't have any pics yet, it's Sunday, I'm suposed to be lazy!!  I will one night after wok this week take some pics, and post them on my page here on RMC.  I'll come back to this blog post, and add a few of them in here too!

Thanks for reading, comments are always welcome!!  If you want, and me as a friend here on RMC, or even on Facebook!  A link to my Facebook page is on my RMC Page, or you can you can just click here!

Congrats on the nice find for your Mom, Franklin.

I want an eMac too. I found one from a guy I trust, but the shipping is expensive from Canada :) so I haven't pulled the trigger yet.

I can understand why it's so high Scott!!  They're heavy little buggers!  According to Mactracker they're 50 lbs., so the shipping is high.  Since your buying older computers, have you given Mactracker a look?  It's a free app on both the Mac, and iOS.  I love it, it's a database of info about all Mac's & many other Apple products.  On the Mac app, you can even inventory all models that you own, and add notes too.  I love it, got my iMac, TAM, both iPods, and iPhone in "My Models"!!

Yes, on the mactracker. use it 'bout everyday. I haven't got a system yet to keep track of my macs yet though, even though mactracker does it....I like to the way BENTO looks better- can look at it in spreadsheet format or more visually with the one at a time layout with pics, etc.

Yep the eMac might not be the cheapest to ship.

It's also really noisy. I replace the vent with a quiet Zalman, but it's not an easy task.

Also beware of graphic problems with some eMac. If you get one which starts to act funny onscreen, there is nothing you can do (graphic chip soldered to motherboard).

Great computer, though. I got my eMac on a stand, which changes the whole look. From heavy and bulky, it becomes something else.
